Our society is filled with comfort and modern technology, though many people in our world live in untold suffering and poverty. We live in an instant society....we want it now! Although computers link us together around the world, ours is still a very lonely, isolated society. Ours is a media-saturated culture. Girls in particular are told how to dress, what to think, and how to act in both very blatant and subtle ways. Mixed messages constantly bombard the minds of our girls. American families have drastically changed throughout the last several decades. Parents are more likely to be overworked, overcommitted, tired with little time to devote to their children. Children in turn can easily become lost in the shuffle or even distance themselves from families. Our society has gone crazy over sex. Perhaps the greatest pressure our girls face comes directly from their peers ... pressures that can be either good or bad. Adolescence is marked by an intense preoccupation with self, which grows and changes daily. In teen years, girls often experience tremendous social pressure to deny who they really are. Comparison to others is rampant and much of life is a consistent drama of competition.
Teenage girls need a place where they feel safe and have the freedom to move independently -- a place to grow and develop into their own uniqueness. Teen girls need to learn to deal with their feelings honestly and the freedom to express their feelings. The more a girl knows herself and what she believes, the less the peer pressure can control her. Role models are so important in an adolescent's life. Learning leadership skills and responsibility while spending time with female Christian role models are priceless relationships. God uses many people to influence our lives.
